The Breton stripe

The Breton stripe originates from French Brittany, where the local population spun yarns and produced shirts for the French navy. The 21 stripes on the sweater are a tribute to Napoleon and his 21 victorious victories. A warm woolen variant was developed for the local sailors, who sailed to England with ships full of garlic in the 19th century. The iconic stripe was an eye-catcher in the most literal sense of the word; a drowning victim wrapped in a Breton stripe was easy to locate – and thus had an advantage over the poor guy who sadly went overboard in a uni sweater.
