Jacket, blazer or sport coat… When do you wear which?
Blazer, sports jacket or suit jacket: they may look similar, but the difference is in the details. Discover which jacket to wear for each occasion and outfit.

First, the terminology

In Dutch, “colbert” refers to a smart tailored jacket. If it comes with matching trousers in the same fabric, it’s a suit jacket. Worn on its own, it’s a blazer or a tailored jacket. The difference lies in the fabric, not the fit. Below, we explain all three:

When do you wear a suit blazer?

A suit jacket comes into its own for formal occasions: a wedding, or a business meeting where you need to look the part. Match your suit to the occasion. If the dress code is formal, go for a full suit, optionally three-piece. With a less formal dress code, you can wear the jacket as a separate and style it with other items.

When and how to wear a blazer?

A blazer is the perfect piece for a job interview, or any other occasion where you want to look smart without being overdressed. Among casual jackets, it’s the most refined option. Pair it with a stylish chino and a pair of smart shoes to look polished. That’s why a navy blazer is essential in a men’s wardrobe. With this timeless must-have, you can create a sharp look in one go.

When and how do you wear a blazer?

A standalone blazer is ideal for casual occasions where you still want to look well put-together: a date, a housewarming, or an evening on a terrace. Because there’s no matching pair of trousers, you’re free to choose what you wear with it. A tough pair of jeans works just as well as a stylish chino. Finish the look with a shirt or a men’s V-neck jumper on top.

How to style a blue blazer

Adding just one blazer to your wardrobe? Make it blue — it’s the most versatile colour in your closet. In spring, a light-blue version feels fresh; in autumn, navy works better. Pair your blue blazer with light-grey jeans or beige chinos, a white shirt and smart shoes. Blue on blue takes precision, so it’s best to keep your trousers grey, beige or white.

The difference at a glance

  • Suit jacket: pairs with trousers in the same fabric. The most formal jacket.
  • Blazer: designed to be worn separately, usually solid-coloured, often with standout buttons. The smartest standalone jacket.
  • Separate jacket: designed to be worn separately, with texture or a pattern. The most casual option.

If you wear the blazer or the separate jacket on its own, you choose the trousers yourself. Chinos or jeans can look just as stylish as tailored trousers.
