What is two-ply
Two-ply, also written as 2-ply, means that two threads are spun around each other into one stronger yarn. It is therefore about the yarn and not about the weave: a single layer of fabric is then simply woven from that double yarn.
When is two-ply used?
The technique is mainly used in the production of high-quality shirts. Because the yarn is sturdier, the shirt becomes stronger, feels more comfortable and lasts longer. The fabric also covers better, which you notice especially with white shirts: they are less see-through. Two-ply shirts therefore have a more luxurious look than average shirts, and they are usually a bit more expensive.
Incidentally, two-ply is not the only way to make a strong fabric. Thanks to modern weaving techniques you can also produce sturdy cloth with single yarn, usually by choosing a coarser structure such as an oxford weave or twill weave.
