What is acrylic

Acrylic, or polyacrylonitrile (PAN), is a synthetic fibre best known for its soft texture and insulating properties. The material is lightweight and easy to work with, which makes it suitable for outdoor and winter (sports) clothing. Think of scarves, beanies and tracksuits. Acrylic is regularly blended with cotton, polyester or wool to strengthen the whole. Combined with wool it also has a pleasant side effect: it itches less.

Is acrylic comfortable to wear?

Generally yes, especially in the winter months. Because acrylic comes close to wool in wearing comfort, it is an excellent substitute for people who cannot tolerate wool. Conversely, acrylic can cause a reaction in some people; in that case lyocell and modal are suitable alternatives. Also keep in mind that acrylic retains moisture, which can irritate the skin. One thing is important to know: acrylic melts as soon as it comes into contact with fire, so keep it away from open flames.

Pros and cons of acrylic in clothing

Acrylic is pleasantly warm, comfortable and shape-retaining, which means it does not shrink or lose its shape easily in the wash. On the other hand, acrylic breathes less than natural fibres. Because moisture escapes with difficulty, the fabric can quickly feel clammy and stuffy. To maintain quality it is better not to put acrylic in the tumble dryer, which is no problem because it dries quickly. Do make sure you do not hang it to dry in full sun, because the colours fade quickly.
